With smartphones being mostly looking the same in 2016, the hero visual on the display played a key role in marketing and differentiation. When I took the lead on creating visuals for Motorola's 2016 portfolio, I sought an iconic style that was distinctly Moto - real glass materials, playful color, and dynamic lighting.
Each product had character traits based off price points and target consumers - for instance, our Moto Z phones featured laser-etched glass to show the precision of the rear camera detail. Dark and light variations were created to allow a more seamless transition from the front lens to the displays. When our phones sat next to competitors in a store display, it was easy to group the Moto devices.
Not only was it a success for our smartphone lineup, they also made it into the CommArts 2017 Photography annual.
